James Lovelock’s pretty sure we’ve only got about 20 years left before the environment really goes to hell.

Link: http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/2008/mar/01/scienceofclimatechange.climatechange

White House engaged in systematic effort to manipulate climate change science

Best summed up by a quote from Congressman Henry Waxman, House Oversight Committee Chairman:

The evidence before the Committee leads to one inescapable conclusion: the Bush Administration has engaged in a systematic effort to manipulate climate change science and mislead policymakers and the public about the dangers of global warming.

The rest of the report is just as damning. It’s short, I’d recommend taking a look if you’re even the least bit interested in the politics of climate change.

Link: http://oversight.house.gov/story.asp?ID=1653

Al Gore's Nobel Peace Prize

I think FSJ puts it best:

You’re like Obi-Wan Kenobi—struck down, you have become more powerful than we could ever have imagined.

I would love to see this guy—Oscar winner and as of this morning Nobel Laureate—in the Oval Office.

World saved by DRM

I participated in a conversation today in which it was accidentally discovered that global warming — previously thought to be a fairly big deal — should, in effect, solve itself within the year. And it will do so because of DRM.

You see, most of the people participating in the conversation avoided being locked into any given DRM by downloading their music from Russia or parts unknown. (Except me of course, who was laughed at mercilessly for actually buying music.)

As the various methods of procuring illicit files were discussed, it was brought up that everyone’s favorite place to find <aq href="http://www.bittorrent.com/">torrents, The Pirate Bay, is attempting to buy the Principality of Sealand, a not-necessarily-so-independent nation off the coast of Suffolk, England. The Pirate Bay (who are now calling themselves the ‘Pirates of Sealand’) believe that by hosting their data on Sealand they will render themselves untouchable by various national laws regarding “controversial web businesses.” (Even though it should be pointed out, this has been tried unsuccessfully in the past.)

We decided if the Pirate Bay were dogged enough to successfully claim Sealand and move their from their Swedish homes, it would at least in some small part require the efforts of the Royal Navy to force them to leave.

Which suddenly and inexplicably brought us to, of all places, the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

You see, in FSM lore, the rising temperature of the earth is directly caused by a steady decline in the pirate population.

As we thought about DRM, The Pirate Bay and the Flying Spaghetti Monster, we realized any action by pirates that could potentially provoke a response from a naval power such as Great Britain must certainly be evidence for a rise in the global pirate population. Which, by the arguments outlined above, must also mean that the Earth is starting to cool.

Take that “scientists who study climate change.” I believe it is entirely possible that DRM just saved the world.
