Thunderstorms

We had an interesting sunset last night that I knew wouldn’t turn out in the camera, so I decided to play around with a little HDR. The results are great, with the exception of the fact that no matter what I do I don’t seem to be able to get my edges right. (Look at the tops of the houses.)

Tips anyone?

If you’re in the mood for experimenting, feel free to try things out yourself — here are the three shots I combined to make the one above.

Let me know if you can get those rooftops to look right.

Amy, Mom, and Dad and I spent the weekend at a Rocky Mountain School of Photography workshop. I learned more in the last two days about shooting good images than in any other photography workshop I’ve taken.

It was a blast — thanks for the birthday present guys!

As an amateur photogeek — as I and everyone to whom I’m related seem to be — all day Saturday was fantastic. Amy, my parents and I spent the day at the Vilas Zoo with real actual professional photogeeks from The Camera Company, learning how to think about the shots we were taking and mess with our cameras to get the best effect. It was a delayed Father’s Day present for my dad, though I have a hunch it ended up being a gift for all of us.

I was 27th in line for an iPhone

... but it wasn’t enough. I was also the first person in line to be told they ran out of 8Gb iPhones. Ah well, there are worse ways to spend 5 hours in the baking hot sun. At least Josh and I had jury-rigged umbrellas.

Weekend fun

I’m really happy with the photos I took of Amy waterskiing (the subject matter helps of course). I used my Sigma 105mm lens, set it to manual focus, locked it in (after all, she wasn’t getting any nearer or farther from the boat) and shot away. The sun was at a great angle, and I used a circular polarizing filter to cancel out as much of the glare off the water as I could. Lots of fun if you’re a photogeek like me.
